If you follow the headline news at all, It’s virtually impossible not to know that over the past couple of weeks, hurricanes Helene and Milton have once again brought the global climate crisis into sharp focus. These devastating storms, which have ravaged homes, taken lives, and caused widespread destruction, are the latest in a string of extreme weather events that scientists attribute to our warming planet.<\/p>\n

As we witness the increasing frequency of such disasters, it\u2019s natural to feel profound despair. In fact, just today, The Living Planet Report<\/em> broke the alarming news that a staggering 73% of wildlife has disappeared in the last 50 years! This is a devastating, irreversible loss that points to the scale of the damage being done to our ecosystems.\u00a0Nature is the very container that holds us as humanity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet…if you feel overwhelmed, powerless, or\u00a0 despairing in the face of this tragic decline,<\/span>\u00a0there is<\/em> something you can do from a soul-centered perspective:\u00a0<\/span>Carl Jung suggested that there is value in holding the tension of any opposing forces. It\u2019s in the space between despair and hope that true transformation can emerge, so instead of sinking into paralysis, we can see this moment as a call to consciousness\u2014a chance to wake up to the reality of our planet’s plight and to act with a deepened sense of purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jung believed in the importance of confronting the shadow\u2014those parts of ourselves and our culture that we would rather ignore. The exploitation of nature for short-term gain, the prioritization of profit over sustainability, and the denial of our interconnection with the Earth are parts of that shadow. Facing these aspects of ourselves can be painful, but it’s essential if we are to stop the cycle of destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n

From a soul-centered perspective, we can view the Earth as a living being, as indigenous cultures have done for millennia. In his groundbreaking book,\u00a0<\/span>Living in the Borderland<\/em>, Jungian analyst Jerome Bernstein reminded us that \u201cThe natural world is reaching out to us, calling us to reestablish our lost relationship before it is too late.\u201d In this context, it seems clear that nature\u2019s increasing extreme responses\u2014like the hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, and mass wildlife loss, among others\u2014are not just warnings but an urgent invitation to reconnect, to hear its call before it\u2019s too late.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, they need to be “fixed,” and expeditiously, to be sure, but in holding the tension, we allow space for new consciousness to arise. As more people become aware of the urgency of the climate crisis, there is potential for collective action that nurtures the planet rather than continuing its destruction.<\/p>

We are at a tipping point. Our choices today will determine the future for generations to come. By confronting the reality of our situation and allowing ourselves to feel both the grief and the hope, we create the possibility of healing\u2014not just for ourselves, but for the Earth itself. As Bernstein suggested, nature is giving us one final chance to pull back from the brink.
