Dear Depth Community,
As February starts winding down, I'm thinking about Summer. It's been unseasonably warm and dry across the U.S. this year and I've been longing to be outside soaking up the sun. Things in my garden are starting to get tiny shoots and buds even though it's early, and even the bees are coming out for some air. I am reminded of the symbol of the Sun in Alchemy. It represents consciousness, and also the Father or the King. There is also reference to an "inner sun" (Mysterium Lectures, Edinger).
Dr. Thom Cavalli (a psychologist and also an Alliance member), refers to the sun as having the power to "enliven physical bodies and illuminate consciousness" (Embodying Osiris: The Secrets of Alchemical Transformation, p. 143). Jungian analyst and Alliance member Monika Wikman writes in Pregnant Darkness: Alchemy and the Rebirth of Consciousness about the need for balance between the Sun and the Moon, saying "The awakening of the diurnal nature of the psyche, of the sun and moon principles within the individual, is the opus of depth psychology." (p. 149). And C.G. Jung, in The Red Book, eloquently states, "Man here, God there. Weakness and nothingness here, eternally creative power there. Here nothing but darkness and clammy cold, there total sun." (p. 354).
Seeking the sun to find the illumination of consciousness and the balance our psyche craves is natural at a time of year when the days are short and the soul knows the season. I find sunlight in the Alliance community all year round. Thanks to you all for being here. If you haven't visited lately, come on overand bask; let your inner sun ignite.
In soul,

"Field, Form, & Fate: Patterns in Mind, Nature, & Psyche" with Michael Conforti PhD
"Matter is Spirit Moving Slowly Enough to be Seen"~Teilhard di Chardin
The inspiration and thread which Chardin followed to arrive at this profound understanding of the inexorable relationship between matter and psyche serves as the muse for Dr. Conforti's work and writing.
Field, Form, and Fate walks the reader through Jung's encounter with the numinous, Von Franz's work on archetypal patterns and the discoveries in the New Sciences, to show how it is that matter truly is the face of the transcendence.
Join Dr. Conforti and your Depth Alliance peers in the March Book Club for an in-depth discussion of the generation of form within the psyche and the natural world, of Jung's work on the nature of the archetype, and of Jung's later discoveries on the nature of the psychoidal, coupled with discoveries from the New Sciences, Dr. Conforti takes us into the workings of psyche as it is manifested in the individual and collective experience.

& the Loss & Regeneration of Soul-
Bonnie Bright with Jungian Dr Arlene Landau
In this interview, Arlene Landau speakspoignantly about how the Venus/ Aphrodite archetype manifests in our culture and the role Jungian analysis as a way to understand it.
Aphrodite is the golden goddess of love and beauty in Greek mythology. Women who embody the Aphrodite archetype, Landau reveals in her new book, Tragic Beauty, have much less choice in how they behave or react than they, orothers. Myths say Venus/Aphrodite qualities are essential for the joy of life, but the shadow side of Aphrodite manifests when a woman is completely identified with Aphrodite's powers, and when other archetypal qualities of the feminine are unimportant to her. The tragedies that result from this are the subject of numerous well-known
novels and films and exemplified in the lives of certain actresses and other celebrities.
Dr. Arlene Landau shares glimpses of her own identification with the Venus/Aphrodite archetype and her journey to understand it while helping others do the same.

"To confront a person with his Shadow is to show him his own light. Once one has experienced a few times what it is like to stand judgingly between the opposites, one begins to understand what is meant by the self. Anyone who perceives his Shadow and his light simultaneously sees himself from two sides and thus gets in the middle." ~ C.G.Jung, (CW l0:Civilization in Transition: 872, p. 46).
